Poor Existence of People
“I can’t get over the poor existence of the people in the villages here,” writes a New Zealand soldier with the N.Z.E.F. in Italy. “It is a cruel sight to see really old women paddling, barefooted, down the muddy lanes with huge loads on their heads. Children hang about the cook-house in dozens and take whatever scraps we have to offer them. They seem to enjoy the worst tucker as though it were a Christmas feast. It makes one realise what enormous problems post-war reconstruction will present to the Government heads.” stitute.
