Life Aboard a Dutch Ship
A Christchurch man, Able Seaman John Andrews, serving on a Netherlands merchant ship, has written an enthusiastic description of life on the ship and of the good treatment which the men on board receive. At Christmas, he writes, when the Dutch Government provided presents for them all, he was given a gold signet ring, a pair of wooden clogs and 200 cigarettes. On Boxing Day the shipping committee invited those on board to dinner and a dance.
