MR W. TAYLOR HONOURED HIKUTAIA BOWLING CLUB PRESENTATION FROM MEMBERS The Hikutaia Bowling Club held a most pleasant function at their green recently when they entertained Mr W. Taylor, popular veteran bowler of Paeroa, to celebrate his 80th. birthday and to make him a life member of the Hikutaia Club. The club officials had arranged for the “Creasers Kittens” to be played for, six teams taking part in the competitions, and the guest of the day, Mr Taylor, was skip of one of the teams. The end of the day saw two teams, Claude Elliott’s and G. Henwood’s, even, with four wins and one loss each and the final for the trophies will be played later. Mr Taylor’s 80th. Birthday.

After a dainty afternoon tea had been served Mr G. Avery, president of the club, welcomed their guest, Mr W. Taylor, and congratulated him on having attained his 80th. birthday and said how pleased the Hikutaia Club was to have him with them on such an occasion and to have him taking part in their club competition for the “Creasers Kittens.” On behalf of all the members of the Park, Mr Avery then asked Mr Taylor to accept a small birthday gift which they hoped he would find useful. ■

Also, said Mr Avery, the Hikutaia Club wished Mr Taylor to do them the honour of becoming a life member of their club. He said he hoped to see him playing on their green for many years to come. Mr Avery then called upon vice-president E. Elliott to speak.

Mr Elliott said he would like to endorse all the remarks of the previous speaker in connection with Mr Taylor.

Mr Taylor was, he said, a very old friend and a fine old man and it gave him great pleasure to welcome him into the club as a life member. He hoped he would be spared for many more years to play bowls as in his opinion there was no happier bowler in the Thames Valley, win or lose, he was always the same. Three cheers were heartily given for the guest and “For He’s A Jolly. Good Fellow,” was sung. Replying, Mr Taylor said it was a great pleasure to him to be present, in fact he was always glad to come to Hikutaia whether invited or not. He had known and respected the settlers of Hikutaia for many years and had always been on good terms with them all. He felt the members had done fine work maintaining their green year after year with such a small membership. Mr Taylor’s Thanks

-He expressed his thanks for their gift and for the honour they had done him by making him a life member of their club, also for the kind words of Mr Avery and Mr Elliott and for the function they had tendered him. Nothing better could have been done anywhere in the district, said Mr Taylor. The game -of bowls brought men together and enabled them to understand each other more than anything else they could do.
