NGATEA DISTRICT HIGH MORE LAND PURCHASED CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW OF TERM “During the past two years much has been achieved by the members of the committee in consolidating gains already made and in further progress towards enlarging the school grounds and extending the existing buildings and facilities,” stated the annual report of the chairman of the Ngatea District High School, Mr D. Waite, presented to the biennial meeting of householders held recently. The report continued: — “The additional four acres purchased from Mr Hayward has been graded and made available as a playing area for football and cricket. Free Water For School “The new alignment at the riverbank corner has been fenced and a hedge planted for the full distance of the curve. “Working in conjunction with the other school committees of the district, free water has been obtained from the Hauraki Plains County Council for all school purposes except the swimming baths. “ With a view to having the school buildings arranged in one compact block and so avoid encroachment on to the playing fields, the committee successfully negotiated for the purchase of part of Mr Hammond’s property to accommodate the new high school buildings. A sum of £2090 has been granted for the building. Tenders have been called and the building has been placed on the urgent works list. War Problems “Owing to war conditions difficulty has been experienced in maintaining teaching staffs and much credit is due to the headmaster and his staff for the splendid results achieved under adverse conditions. “Much credit is due to the caretakers for the manner in which they have carried out their duties and the condition in which they have kept the grounds. The committee is grateful to the parents and others who assisted and supported all school functions and sports gatherings. “In conclusion I wish to thank the members of the committee for the support they have given me during my term as chairman and the able manner in which they have executed their duties as committeemen.”
