CARRIERS REPLY

ATTITUDE OF THE COUNTY STATE OF ROADS & BRIDGES SOME SURPRISE EXPRESSED Dissatisfaction at the attitude adopted by the Ohinemuri County Council at its last meeting to theii complaint regarding the state of roads and bridges in the county was expressed by members of the Thames Valley Carriers’ Association at its last meeting and the secretary was instructed to forward the following letter to the council and hand a copy to the press for publication. The letter to the council read as under: —

“At a meeting of this association held on March 31, a report was read from the Hauraki Plains Gazette, which concerned the reception given by your council to oui* letter of February 14. “The carriers were somewhat surprised at the attitude of the councillors to the matter, affirming the

opinion that the roads in the Waihi area were definitely in a bad state, special reference being made to Golden Valley, Woodlands road, Puke kauri, Waitekauri and Waitawheta. Referring to the reported statement made by one councillor that the carriers did not pay the rates, and that if the carriers’ charges were raised the farmer would suffer, I would like to remind you that a considerable sum is paid by the carriers to the maintenance of the roads through the heavy traffic pool, the petrol tax and tyre tax. Further it is not the carrier’s option to increase his charges. These rates are fixed by the Licensing Authority.”
