CIVIC FAREWELL

PRESENTATION MADE ORD.-SEAMAN R. DAULTON FUNCTION THURSDAY EVENING At a gathering of citizens held in the Paeroa Borough Council Chambers on Monday evening a civic farewell was tendered to a Paeroa sailor at present home on leave. His Worship the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards presided, the guest of honour being Ordinary-Seaman Roy Daul ton. Speaking to Ordinary-Seaman Daulton, Mr Edwards said he was going away on a life full of adventure and he knew him well enough to know he would make the most of the adventures which came his way. He was now entering a new phase in his life and was embarking on a service which was of the greatest importance to the Dominion. The Mayor expressed pleasure at seeing some of the boys from Paeroa joining the Navy which was one of the leading services of the Allied Forces.. Continuing, Mr Edwards said he was confident that Roy would do whatever was asked of him with ability and courage. He expressed the hope that he would have many pleasant times while in the Navy, assuring him that he would see many different places which would be full of interest. Greetings To Other Paeroa Boys He asked Roy to convey to any Paeroa boys he might meet while on service, greetings from the people of Paeroa and to assure them that the people of their home town often thought of them. In presenting the usual letter and wallet to Roy the Mayor wished him good sailing, many happy hours in port and a safe return to Paeroa at an early date. Mr W. Smith endorsed the remarks of the Mayor and spoke of the great service the Navy was rendering. He expressed his sorrow to see yet another of the young men goingaway and hoped that he would soon be back in Paeroa fit and well with the present conflict over. Adjutant A. Armstrong also wished the guest of honour all the best for the future. Ordinary-Seaman Daulton was, he said, a young man who would worthily uphold the traditions of the Navy. Speaking on behalf of the Paeroa Minister’s Association he wished him a safe and speedy return to New Zealand. Ordinary-Seaman Daulton suitably replied, expressing thanks for the presentation. Three cheers and the singing of “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow.” ■brought the function to a close.
