Dr. Lankester, formerly a wellknown. London coroner, once wrote about tobacco: “I dare not, as a physiologist, tell you there exists any proof of its injurious influence when used in moderation. But the first symptoms of giddiness, sickness, palpitation, weakness or uneasiness while smoking* should induce you to lay it aside. Neglect these warnings and you may be sorry.” The unpleasant symptoms referred to by the doctor often follow the use of foreign tobaccos, but never the use of the tobaccos grown and manufactured by the National Tobacco Company Ltd. (pioneers of the New Zealand tobacco industry). It’s simply a question of nicotine. Most foreign brands are full of it. The tobaccos referred to contain hardly any. Also, they are toasted. This process develops flavour and aroma and prevents “bite.” There are various brands (all excellent), special favourites being Riverhead . Gold (mild and delicious), Desert Gold, Pocket Edition, Cavendish (medium —the sportsman’s smoke), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog—medium), and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead--full strength) Safe smoking because they are toasted.
