SOIL CONSERVATION

REPLY TO COUNTY REQUEST QUESTION OF AFFORESTATION When the Piako County Council met recently it considered a letter received through the Thames Valley Drainage Board from the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council which was a reply to a request previously made by the county council that the Thames High School Endowment property at Waiorongomai should be afforested. The letter, which caused much interest, was as follows: “When the council was in Te Aroha last October your board represented the question of the council taking over the Thames High School Endowment with a view to afforestation. Since then the council has had the opportunity of considering reports on the area, and at the last meeting it was decided that the suggestion be declined, “The council is of the opinion that the High School Board should give serious consideration to the question of planting this area, and without making any commitment, I may say that the council is empowered to give grants or loans to any body for the purpose of purchasing, planting and maintaining tree, shrujbs, plants or grasses for the purpose of conserving the soil.” It was resolved; that a copy of the letter be forwarded to the Thames High School authorities.
