TASK FOR 1944
PATRIOTIC COLLECTIONS MEETING IN COROMANDEL PLANS FOR RAISING QUOTA The poor attendance at the public meeting held on Wednesday, March. 15, 1944 in the Coromandel County Chambers must not be the measure, by which the public of Coromandel, respond to the appeal for patriotic funds, for the efforts, put forward over the past year prove that the patriotic spirit was well in evidence and the committee in charge of the appeal for 1943 was highly congratulated for their effort by the county chairman, Mr C. C. Rae, in his opening remarks. The difficulty of transport no doubt, .precluded the attendance of representatives from other parts of the county and so those that did attend the meeting were faced with the problems of collecting or schemes for, collecting the sum of £1440' 12s 3d during the current year. The secretary of the inter-zone committee, “Mr J. H. Lucas, read, a statement of the past efforts in the collection of funds and the provision of comforts, the figures below being quoted:—
A suggestion had been circulated that for the purpose of the 1944 Appeal for funds, the county or interzone area be re-constituted into two main sub-committees representing west and east, the first six named sub-committees on foregoing schedule to be the west sub-committee and’ the remaining four the east. This suggestion was argued out for the reasons that several of the smaller sub-committees last year fell far short of the amount or quota set and to give the larger committes a bigger area over which to work. It was also realised that farmers and others resident in the more scattered parts of the county come into the shopping centres and while there no doubt largely contribute to any patriotic appeal that was being made at the moment. The nett result last year over the whole county was £228 16s. 8d short which amount is added to the 1944 quota, making a target of £1440 12s 3d as above stated. This sum is divided up 64 per cent, west and 36 per cent. east. An election for two members of the public to the inter-zone committee resulted in" Mr P. J. Murphy being reelected and, Mr A. H. Benham replacing Mr T. M. Lillis. The election for members to the west sub-committee resulted in Mesdames Inglis, Tarrant-Hoskins, Peachey, Whittle and Anderson, the last three subject to their consent and Messrs T. Lillis, A. H. Benham, A. Willett, N. S. Wade and D. H. Knight with power to add, also the chairman and secretary of each of the other previously-organised sub-com-mittees from the outlying districts. The set-up of the eastern committee it was agreed would have to be left to Whitianga to organise. Prior to the termination of the meeting the chairman, Mr C. C. Rae said he wished to take the opportunity of saying a few words of commendation and tendering his best thanks on /behalf of the inter-zone, • Coromandel sub-committee and himself for the very excellent work carried out by Miss Velma J. Davies as secretary to the Coromandel sub-com-mittee last year and in doing so also handed her a small cheque as a token of his appreciation. Miss V. J. Davies suitably replied to Mr Rae’s kindly remarks and stated she did not want any payment as she considered she had been paid already and therefore would hand the cheque over to -be paid into the patriotic fund.
