TORRENTIAL RAIN
11.10 INCHES IN AFTERNOON FALL RECORDED AT SUVA Although Paeroa and Hauraki Plains residents have expressed the opinion that recent rains experienced have been heavy they have been nothing compared with the rainfall experienced at Suva recently. The Suva Times, a copy of which has recently been received in Paeroa, in a news item states as under: — “The very heavy rain experienced over the Suva peninsula on Thursday afternoon amounted to 11.10 inches at
the Meteorological Office gauge. Maximum intensity occurred' between 5.10 p.m. and 5.40 p.m. when rain fell at the rate of 4.30 inches per hour. Over the two hours, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. some 6.00 inches were recorded. The very heavy fall was localised in the Suva Peninsula and only moderate rains were experienced at Navua and Nausori. The maximum authenticated 24houriy fall at Suva was 26.5 inches recorded in 1906.” During the heavy rainfall experienced in (Paeroa over the week-end, March 4 to 6, only 2.23 inches were recorded.
