HAURAKI PLAINS RATES COUNTY’S GOOD POSITION CLERK’S REPORT TO COUNCIL That at the end of February 98J per cent, of the current European rates on the Hauraki Plains had been collected was reported by the county clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney at Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. The report read as under: —- “Following is a full analysis of the rate position, at the date penalty was imposed. The collection 1 has been better than ever before: — Total rates levied 1943-44, £28677 13s lOd; less native rates, £4ll 15s 4d, less levied- in error, etc., £lB 11s 4d, £430 6s Bd. European rates levied, £28247 7s 2d, European rates col-, lected to '29:2:44, £2780-7 3s 8d; 'European rates outstanding, 29:2:44, £440 3s- 6d. Ninety-eight and a-half per cent of the amount levied for 1943-44 on Europeans has been paid. The percentage of all Europetan and native rates collected was 97i per .cent, of the total amount levied. Native Rates Native rates levied totalled £4ll 15s 4d; native rates collected, £135 17s 6d, or 32.8 per cent, of the amount levied;£27sl7s lOd. Written off, £209 4s Id; outstanding 29:2:44, £66 13s 9d. Rates outstanding at beginning of year totalled £2479 12s 2d; written off, mostly native extending over several years, £648 5s 4d—£lB3l 6s 10d;

collected to 29:2:44, £1247 16s 9d, outstanding, 29:2:44, £583 10s Id. Total rates outstanding at 29:2:44: —1943-44 European, £440 3s 6d, native £66 13s 9d—£so6 17s 3d; arrears, European £583 10s Id—£lo9o 7s 4d. Position of Ridings Total rates collected to 29:2:44 was £29,190' 17s lid or 101.8 per cent, of ; the amount levied for 1943-44. Rates outstanding in each riding for 1943-44 are:— Tuma. —1 ratepayer; current, £1 0s Od; arrears, £1 8s 4d; total, £2 8s 4d. Kopuarahi.—l ratepayer; £lB 6s 8d; £47 9s 6d; £65 16s 2d. Horahia. —2 ratepayers; £Bl Os Od; £5 5s Od; £B6 5s od. Kerepeehi.—3 ratepayers (1 native); £23 16s 8d; £302 9s 9d; £326 6s sd. Nether ton ratepayers (1 native); £4B 7s 6d; nil; £4B 7s 6d. iPatetonga.—s ratepayers (1 native), £9O 17s 6d; £lO9 12s 0d; £2OO 9s 6d. Ngatea.—3' ratepayers; £22 2s Id; £l5 10s 4d; £37 12s sd. Pipiroa.—l ratepayer; £3O 7s lOd; £lO 2s 2d; £4O- 10s Od. Waitakaruru. —5 ratepayer (1 native); £l9O 10s Od; £9l 13s Od; £282 12s Od. Totals. —Current, £506 17s 3d; arrears, £583 10s Id; total, £lO9O 7s 4d. “Of the £583 10s Id arrears the sum of £415 16s 10d is owing by four persons but three of these are controlled by orders. Those In Arrears “ I anticipate being able to collect a further £l5O of current year’s rates before March 31 and a further £lOO of arrears which will bring the total outstanding at the end of the year to well under a thousand pounds and the percentage of current rates collected to over 99. “As regards the unpaid current year’s rates all defaulters have been

written to, but several seem disinclined to pay and I know no reason why they should not align themselves with the other 98£ per cent. I now propose to sue these forthwith where arrangements have not been made for payment.” Members congratulated the clerk on the excellent collection effected and spoke highly of the work he had put in to achieve such results.
