PRIVILEGES SOUGHT

BRITISH MERCHANT NAVY SUPPORT BY MR SUTHERLAND Would • the Minister of Railways authorise his department to extend to the members of the British Merchant Navy similar travelling privileges as those enjoyed by other branches of the Armed Forces? asked Mr A. S. Sutherland, National M.P. for Hauraki, in the House of Representatives. Mr Sutherland said these men were exposed to great danger on the high seas. In England men of the Merchant Navy received four free rail warrants a year and in addition they were allowed cheap travel rates arranged through the Seamen’s Union. If those privileges could be granted in New Zealand, it would be highly appreciated.
