It is not one of the spectacular items of the war effort, and probably seldom, if ever, occurs to the average citizen, but the fact that last season the meat stores of the Dominion were practically cleared, and that the same satisfactory position is anticipated this season, is really amazing. Few people would have ventured to predict such a state of affairs after some years of war. It shows how definite has been the Allied control of the seas, for the journey from this country to British ports must be the longest of any. The commencement of a new season with practically empty stores will remove the risk of congestion. Last season there were no stoppages caused by lack of storage, showing that the danger once thought to be imminent has been dealt with effectively. As Allied operations extend, the demand on shipping will become heavier than ever, and it might not be wise to count on the facilities that have been made available for the shipment of produce being maintained at that level. But the need for the foodstuffs especially of butter and cheese, will be as great as ever, and the huge output of Allied shipping to cater for non-refrigerated cargoes may enable sufficient tonnage to be released for the Dominion’s refrigerated require- I ments.
