THE PIG HUNTER
Recent pig-hunting exploits reported in the Waihi “Telegraph” have inspired the following verses by a Waihi rhymster:—
I can see no earthly reason why we . should be short of pork— One needs 'but to go to the pub, and to hear the talk Of the hunters, who are hunters of the wild and hairy boar, And you’d come to the conclusion that we needn’t mind the war.
For within our hilly forests, and upon the hill There is pork afoot in plenty only waiting for the kill. ■ And if you are short of tucker ani would like a brace of hogs, Go out with Big “Bull” Radford and his pack of killer dogs.
You must be prepared to clamber up and down the mountainside., Never pausing for a breather; not a let-up in your stride, Over creeks and rock-strawn ranges; and your heart, it must be big If you follow Eric Radford when he’s in search of pig.
He’s a tough and hardy fellow, and his dog are just as tough; And he glories in the battle where the going’s hard and .rough; And he seldom misses getting half-a-dozeri pigs or more— And that’s one reason fellows, why we needn’t fear the war.
No, there shouldn’t be a shortage while “Bull” Radford is around — A week ago he killed a boar that weighed three hundred pound,
And he lugged it on his shoulders, over hill and through the scrub, And he dumped his bloody thophy in the bar of Les. Lee’s pub.
Now that head is being mounted on a shield of polished wood, To be hung up in his parlour, where it should look mighty good; And the journalists have praised him for that grand and glorious feat— When he landed in the bar-room with, three hundred pounds of meat.
