13TH. BIRTHDAY

INSTITUTE CELEBRATES GATHERING IN PAEROA VERY ENJOYABLE EVENING ■Contrary to superstitious beliefs, the thirteenth birthday of the Paeroa Women’s Institute held recently in the Civic Hall, was a great success. Appreciation was shown with the bright programme arranged. The evening commenced at 8.15 p.m. with the singing the National Anthem followed by an appropriate chorus '(words by Mrs E. Mitchell).

The president, MrS| E. M. Hill, welcomed visitors and friends, expressing her pleasure of the presence of such a large gathering, particularly as the shortage of benzine denied a number? ■of sister institutes the opportunity to travel.

The solos by Mrs H. McKee and Miss Olive Hollinshead were well rendered. Mrs J. Brown was the accompanist. With Miss L. Carter at the piano, Master Lance Whisker was in good form for his tap dancing.

i Members of the Drama Circle were congratulated on their performance in the play, “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals.” Mrs Tate as “The Old Lady,” was remarkably good; also Mrs E. Mitchell as “Kenneth”; Mrs Whisker did very well as “The Reverend Gent,” and mention must ibe made of the three charwomen, Mesdames E. Marsh, M. A. Hollinshead and I. F, Homer. Arrangements for supper were in the capable hands of Mrs G. Bennett, assisted by Mrs S. J. White, Mrs W. Pearson and Mrs E. Lipsham.

Judging by the applause, Mrs Jarey’s Waxworks were very popular. The characters were:— Mrs H. Tate as Mrs Jarey; Mrs I. F. Homer, Queen Victoria; Mrs P. George, Duchess of Windsor; Mrs V. Turton, Madame Squaliner; Mrs B. Lipsham, Ghandi; Mrs E. Marsh, Mrs Pankhurst; Mrs E. Spinks, Charlie Chaplin; Miss B. Smith, Laughing Lady; Mrs E. Hill, Joan of Arc; Mrs E. Williams, Catherine of Arogan; Mrs M. A. Hollinshead, Queen Elizabeth.

The birthday cake, made by Mrs McKenna, was beautifully iced in the institute colours. The president called on the vice-president, Mrs V. Turton, to light the candles and Mrs E. Marsh to extinguish them. The secretary, Mrs M. A. Hollinshead, had the privilege of cutting the cake. Floral sprays were presented to the president and; several members and also to visitors' of sister institutes. The sound system was kindly loaned by Mr G. Jennings who also supplied the music for dancing; Mrs E. Spinks and Master Pearson playing the extras.

A very enjoyable evening came to an end at 12.30 a.m.
