PAEROA WIN
JVAIHI BEATEN 20 TO 6 TEAMS LACKING IN DASH MATCH PLAYED IN HOT SUN Playing in hot sun at Waihi' on Saturday, the Paeroa Rugby Union’s junior representative team defeated Waihi by 20 to 6 in a game which could only be described as ragged and lacking enthusiasm. The Paeroa backs staged several good passing rushes, scores resulting from some, but on the whole both teams lacked dash. Paeroa, who were playing a considerably weaker team than themselves should have run up a big score but failed to do so mainly through the little interest which the team as a whole put into the game. The teams lined out as under:-— Paeroa (green).—C. Speechlay, J. Jamieson, W. Shilton, G. Fraser, R. Baker, K< Ryall, F. Chaney, W. Niven, N. Vinnicombe, W. Strong, R. Ned., J. Murphy, R. Pearson, G. Smith, N. Hansen. Waihi (black and gold).—R. Grinlinton, R. Jordan, S. Armitt, R. Bennie, B. Scoble, N. Thomas, W. Dunston, R. Ashby, Grant, W. Durie, R. Blackmore, G. Porter, E. Berrymen, T. Fry, D. Robertson. Glimpses of the Game Paeroa kicked off and play settled down in ragged play midfield until a long kick by Waihi carried play to within 15 yards of the Paeroa line where the ball went out of play. Waihi continued to attack and had easily the territorial advantage, most of. the play being in the greens’ twentyfive. After a period the Paeroa forwards settled and took more control of plav and gradually forced the play into the Waihi territory. From a scrum midfield the ball came out to Chaney who sent Ryall away to hand on to Jamieson who sent on to Ryall who had come round outside. Ryall handed out to Shilton ,who had come round in support, the last-named scoring wide out. Ryall did no good with the kick. 'Paeroa 3, Waihi 0. Waihi rushed play to the Paeroa line where several scrums were ordered, Waihi having the advantage but the Paeroa defence held. Thompson eventually attempted a drop-kick from wide out but did r.o good and Paeroa forced. A Pretty Movement From a scrum near mid-field the ball came back to Chaney who sent Ryall Away. Ryall handed out to Baker who sent it on to Shilton who with a nice - turn of speed made a good opening and then sent Fraser across well out. Ryall gained the major points with a beautiful kick. paeroa 8, Waihi 0. , Waihi from the kick penetrated into Paeroa territory but Durie was injured and had to retire and Paeroa returned play into the Waihi twentyfive. McCarthy replaced Durie. Paeroa backs got away but Shilton was\stopped when in a likely position. Paeroa continued to attack and a struggle ensued under -the Waihi posts where a scrum was ordered. Paeroa continued to attack and time and again were almost across but the Waihi defence held. Paeroa secured from a scrum but failed to make use of it and Waihi carried play to midfield. Waihi worked to the Paeroa line where a line-out was ordered and in the ensuing scramble Blackmore scored well out. Grinlinton missed the kick. . Paeroa 8, Waihi 3. Bustling tactics carried Paeroa into the Waihi twenty-five. From a lineout Paeroa secured, Chaney, Ryall, Baker, Shilton all handling in turn but Fraser failed to hold his pass and the movement broke down. Good Work By Ryall Paeroa kepk on attack and Ryall when challenged attempted a dropkick which did no good but Ryall followed up fast to score under the posts. Ryall missed an easy pick. Paeroa 11, Waihi 3. Waihi gradually worked to the Pae- ' roa goal line where the attackers were awarded a free kick right beside the posts but Grinlinton missed the kick. Half-time was called with Waihi attacking. Paeroa 11, Waihi 3. After the interval a good line kick put Waihi on attack. A free kick to Waihi was missed by Thomas. Waihi continued at press and in a rush made three attempts to dive across 'before 'being pushed out by the corner flag. Paeroa defence held and Ryall kicked clear but Waihi were soon back on attack. Paeroa broke through when Waihi failed to field a long kick and in a scramble under the Waihi posts Han-
sen scored. Ryall missed an easy kick. Paeroa 14, Waihi 3. Paeroa again worked to the attack and in a scramble Baker nearly got through the ball crossing the line but the defenders kicked behind the dead■ball line. Waihi on Attack After a long period of uninteresting play in Waihi territory the 'black and yellows worked play to the Paeroa line where several determined efforts were made to cross the Paeroa line but the defence held and play wasforced back to mid-field. From play near the Waihi twentyfive Baker secured and raced across near the corner flag. Ryall missed the kick. * Paeroa 17, Waihi 3. Smith made a nice run, ball at toe, carrying play from mid-field to within 10 yards of the Waihi line before Waihi stopped him. In the ensuing play Waihi forced. . Paeroa continued to attack and were granted a free kick in a handy position and Speechlay with a nice kick gained three points. Paeroa 20, Waihi 3. Waihi took a turn at attack and had Paeroa pinned under their own posts but a free kick enabled the greens to return play to mid-field. Waihi returned to the attack and Paeroa defence was half-hearted. Thomas had the luck of the bounce wide out and crossed to score a pretty try. Thomas did no good with the kick. ‘ Paeroa 20, Waihi 6. Paeroa at this stage displayed every evidence of a very tired team and Waihi were calling the tune. Time was called without further score. Mr C. Lyndon was the referee.
