TURUA CHURCH DANCE SITE FOR FIRE BRIGADE LAUNCH SERVICE FROM NGATEA (From the Hauraki Plains Gazette of August 27, 1923.) The usual monthly dance organised by the Turua Church of England social committee was held on Tuesday evening last and proved as successful as its predecessors. About fifty couples attended and a very enjoyable time resulted. The music was supplied by Mrs J. Mules and Mr D. Hill, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr J. Schmidt.
Included in the additional clauses of the “Washing-Up” Bill, which was returned to the House of Representatives on Saturday, provision was made for an area of 1 rood, 12’ perches of the Paeroa Domain to be used as a site for a fire brigade station and conveniences for sports clubs. The section is fronting Hall street.
Some months ago when the Puhonga road became impassable an enterprising business man of Ngatea acquired a. launch to enable him to retain customers along the canal and river to Ngarua and Kaihere. This has proved a boon to settlers, who now receive bread, groceries, meat, papers, and mail regularly, and the sound z of the bugle call is eagerly awaited. He reports that they respond to “ Come to the cook-house door ” quicker than to more orthodox calls.
