NGATEA MEETING

PLAINS PATRIOTIC WORK COLLECTIONS THIS YEAR REPRESENTATIVES CONFER A meeting of representatives from the Hauraki Plains Combined Patriotic Committees was held in Ngatea on Monday evening, Mr C. W. Parfitt presiding. Representatives present were Messrs A. Hayes and A. Jordan (Kere j peehi), D. McMillan (Netherton), A. Walters (Kaihere), J. F. Mayn and N. Costello (Patetonga), Mrs E. Sherlock (Ngatea), and the secretary Mr F. E. Hammond. The meeting was called by the secretary. A letter was received from the Auckland Patriotic Committee secretary, Mr M. Wylie, in which he reviewed the position, regarding voluntary deductions from the salaries of civil servants. Mr Wylie said his office had no means of ascertaining the number of Government employees already contributing, but the monthly donations, after being distributed to zones under the provincial allocation scheme, were not very substantial. After some discussion, the following remit was proposed by Mr Mayn and seconded by Mr McMillan: “That the practice of obtaining contributions from public servants through- deductions from salaries, be discontinued, as it is more deterrent than successful, since the more-generous will contribute in two ways.” Increase of Quota The Turua committee wrote expressing concern at the increase of their annual quota. The meeting resolved, on the resoluction of Messrs Parfitt and Jordon, to inform the Turua committee that the separate district quotas, are fixed according to needs of servicemen and women overseas. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr F. Pinchess, of Waitakaruru, advising him that the secretary, Mr Godkin, had left the district, and that Mr Donaldson had resigned, and requesting him (Mr Pinchess) to establish a patriotic organisation at Waitakaruru. It was proposed by the chairman and seconded by Mr Jordon, that the zone secretary for Thames be advised that collections —mainly by direct giving—will improve with the advance of the dairy season, and it is expected that the whole quota will be obtained by the end of the year. Mr McMillan reported that petrol for attending patriotic meetings, as well as for collecting funds, could be obtaihed on application. The secretary was instructed to apply for petrol for attending meetings and. collecting funds during the coming year.
