KAUAERANGA-HIKUAI ROAD
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I do not wish to engage in any controversy with the three Puriri residents who have left nothing undone to block the settlers and residents of the Tairua Valley from getting the shortest and mfost convenient road outlet, purely because the road will not pass their three farms, but as an Digger, I want to draw attention to the Minister of Lands’ policy that he will not settle returned servicemen in the backblocks and have this applied to the Soldier Settlement at Hikuai, the nearest of these settlers being 36s miles from any town.. They have suffered over 20 years’ isolation and if the Minister means what he says, he will certainly see that these old soldiers of the last war are at once given the best road outlet possible, via the Kauaeranga Valley and are no longer compelled to live over 36 miles from any town, “in the backblocks.” I can say that the amount of road required to complete the route is very J small and easily constructed, as I know it well. The old Diggers and present settlers are entitled to the road, quite apart from the new settle- ' ment which is in prospect.—l am. etc., i LAST WAR DIGGER.
