LINEN FLAX
POSSIBILITIES ON PLAINS INVESTIGATION URGED REQUEST BY MR SUTHERLAND A plea to the Government to assist the flax-g-rowing industry, with special reference to the Hauraki Plains, was made by Mr A. S. Sutheland, M.'P. for Hauraki, when speaking on the Estimates in the House of Representatives recently. Mr Sutherland said he had suggested the previous year that the department go into the matter of growing linen-flax in experimental plots on its farms in the South Auckland district.
He had been informed by one constituent that linen-flax had- been grown successfully in that area 40 : years ago, but had been discontinued because the price then was not very remunerative.
With the better .price obtainable today and the better facilities that were available, the flax might be grown successfully in that area. It would give much satisfaction if. the department tried' out a few plots there. Quite a lot of linen-flax could be grown successfully on the Hauraki Plains, even without fertiliser.
