COMPULSORY CLOSING OPINION ATKARANGAHAKE PAYMENT OF VICAR’S STIPEND (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of August 20, 1903.) Regarding the objections to the compulsory 'Saturday closing, we beg to state that with only one exception, the Karangahake shopkeepers are-unanimous to a man in opposing the innovation, and we think it is every shopkeeper’s duty throughout New Zealand to oppose it, as it would be detrimental to trade and extremely inconvenient to the general public. At a special meeting of St. Paul’s Vestry held on Wednesday evening, it was -decided to follow the Bishop’s advice and arrange with the bank for a special stipend account, so that whether funds were in hand or not at the time the vicar’s stipend would always be paid on the day it is due. It was also resolved to bring under the notice of all the church people of the place their duty in regard to the support of the church. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Star of Paeroa Lodge of Druids on Monday evening, Bro. Niccol, A.D., presiding. Several new members were initiated,, and others were proposed for membership. The report of the social commit tee showed that the social held last week had 'been thoroughly successful. At the conclusion of the business, the euchre tourna ment for a handsome framed painting was concluded, Bro. E. Shaw proving the winner. It was decided to hold a musical evening next meeting night, when it is an ticipated there Will be a large f gathering of the brethren. ftiiiuiniiiiiiiiiiii;'iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiin' | iiiniii'»i.iiiiiiuiHiiiniiiiiiiiinniiuiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiii
