TO BE ISSUED FREE

MOTOR DRIVERS’ LICENCES SOLDIERS HOME ON LEAVE COUNTY’ COUNCIL DECISION The question of the issue of motor drivers’ licences to members of the armed forces on leave came up at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County ■Council on Wednesday. A report from the Transport Department stated that a local authority recently applied to the Minister of Transport for permission to issue motor licences free of charge to members of the armed forces oh leave from overseas. On going into the matter, and after consultation with the Audit Office -the local body was advised that the necessary power to do this at the discretion of the local authority was contained in the Patriotic Purposes Emergency Regulations, 1939, Amendment No. 6. Short Period Only As a result of representations from Army Headquarters the Transport Department was authorised by the Honourable Minister for Transport to suggest to all local authorities that in the special circumstances, and as the licences were likely to be issued for a short period only, the local authorities might be prepared to use their powers under the regulations and issue the licences free of charge. The suggestion related, of course, only to the waiving of the fees for the licences and not to any other action such as testing, which might be necessary in the case of new drivers. The council approved the granting, under proper safeguards, of free licences to men of the forces on leave. DECISION ON PLAINS LICENCES TO BE ISSUED FREE When the above matter came before Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council it was unanimously agreed to adopt the suggestion and issue drivers’ licences free to members of the Armed Forces at present home on furlough.
