POWER WASTED

ABUSE OF RESTRICTIONS householders in paeroa NO EFFORT TO ECONOMISE “One can’t turn informer—especially when one lives in a small town like Paeroa—but I would like to know if there is any way of dealing with people who abuse their electric radiators. It is all very well to talk about saving of electricity, but I know that in some cases at least p’eople leave radiators on in houses while they are out so that the houses will be nicely warmed up on their return. Something should surely be done about this.’* These remarks made by Mr C. C. Webb of Paeroa, a member of the Thames Valley. Electric Power Board, created quite a little sensation at the August meeting of the board; It was pointed out that though no heaters were -allowed in business premises between 4 and 6 o’clock, and there was the right of inspection during these hours, the same stringency did not apply to private houses. Nevertheless repeated! appeals had been made for all unnecessary load to be taken off during those hours. The board decided to seek further powers under the Act which ruled that no lights should be left switched on unless some responsible person was at hand to turn them off. This should be made to apply also to radiators.
