RACES AT PAEROA
1943-44 SEASON OPENED THAMES WINTER MEETING TOTALISATOR INCREASE £39171 ■ The 1943-44 racing season was opened in the Auckland district on S?(Mrfe at Paeroa when the Thames Club stageS its winter meeting on tne Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s course.. Heavy rain during the proceeding week had made the track heavy, but the weather on the day was fine although threatening in the early part of the morning. This no doubt affected the attendance which although good was not as large as has 'been seen on the Paeroa course in recent years.
The totalisator showed an increase of £3917 10s on the day, £30,605 10s being put through the machine on Saturday against £26,688 in 1942. The only local horses to experience any success were Mr F. Handley’s Sweet Baffles, which ran second in the First Trial Plate and Mr H. Evans’ Betterman which was placed third in the principal event of the meeting, the President’s Handicap. Details:—
