FUNCTION AT TIROHIA MEN FROM MIDDLE EAST HOME GUARD HOLDS A SOCIAL A happy evening was spent in the Tirohia School on Saturday, July 31, when the • Tirohia-Mangaiti Home Guard held a welcome home social in honour of Pte. J. Bertelsen, Pte. N. Campbell, Sgt. R. Kilgour, Sgt. A. Alp, Acting-Sgt. J. Sherry, Pte. H. Lord. There was a large crowd from Paeroa and Mangaiti to swell the ranks of the local residents and the entire proceeds "were donated to the Tirohia Soldiers’ Welfare Club. Items rendered during the evening were:—Songs i>y Mrs Noble; humorous items, Mr B. ,Grant; tap dance, Elvie Tilsley, Margaret Young and Colleen Mathieson; selections on bagpipes, Isobel Ryde.

Mr Cliff Jackson acted as M.C. for the dance the music being provided by Messrs C. C. Jackson, H. C. Jackson, Acting-Sgt. Sherry and Mrs G. W. Wild. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss A. Handley and Mr A. Finlay. The spot waltz was won by Mrs Frank Handley and Mr R. Fenton. Card Results Mr F. Bennett as M.C. for cards announced the following results for five hundred: —Ladies, Mrs Radcliff; consolation, Mrs Silcock. Gentlemen, Mr C. Tilsley; consolation, Mr T. Tukaki. The supper provided ..by the ladies was served by energetic Home Guardsmen. Speeches- of welcome were made by Mr G. W.-Wild (Home Guard.), P. Henah (Maoris),, and Mr J. Bilcock (local residents). Mr W. Noble endorsed the remarks and as chairman of the Soldiers’ Welfare Club thanked the Home Guard for their contribution. Mr G. W. Wild thanked the artists for their help and the ladies for the excellent catering. I Sgt. R. Kilgour and Acting-Sgt. Sherry replied on behalf of the returned men. A fat hogget donated by Mr V. Bertelsen was won by Mr F. Handley. This was then put up to auction and knocked down to Mr W. Noble. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” concluded a very happy evening.
