Alone He Did It!
Fifty years ago, the Rev. N. RLouwyck, South Australian Anglican clergyman, now 78 and retired, began to write a book. “Man’s Struggles and Stumbles.” It developed into two volumes. Acting as his own printer and bookbinder, he has just spent twelve months running off 100 copies of 200 pages each. Electric Car Using 24 old car batteries as motor power, a South Australian made an electric automobile with a 4 h.p.- engine run non-stop 94 miles at an average speed of 24 miles an hour at a running cost of 1/ —world record, of course. The motors are embodied in the two back wheels, making a differential unnecessary. Batteries are re- ' charged from the electric mains with ' an automatic cut-out. Saved a Bomber
A Hudson bomber was damaged in an attack on an enemy wireless telegraph ship north of Australia and lost height rapidly. One motor cut out. At 300 ft the pilot ordered guns and ammunition to be jettisoned. At 200 ft the front gunner threw out his second gun. It hit the second and lastsurviving propeller and altered its pitch. Speed and climb of the plane increased and it made Darwin without further difficulty. Safety Device on Aeroplanes A further development in the use of carbon dioxide gas for protection against fire in aircraft is reported. An impact switch can now be fitted to aeroplanes, which automatically releases compressed gas into the engine compartment of the machine as it crashes, smothering dangerous flames.
