FORTY YEARS AGO
PAEROA CATHOLIC SOCIAL
AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS
EUCHRE TOURNAMENT HELD
(From the Ohinemuri Gazette of July 26, 1902.) The Catholic social held in the Criterion Theatre last evening was very well attended, and was an unqualified, success. As usual the arrangements were all of the best, and an enjoyable time was spent iby everybody. The music was supplied iby Mr Mettam, Miss Capill and Miss Pugh in their usual- accomplished manner. The euchre tournament was well patronised the first prizes falling to Mr Feilder (a writing desk presented by Messrs Ellis and Hunt), and Mrs Adolph (a cosy presented by the Catholic Bazaar Committee). The “booby” prizes fell to Mrs Poland and Mr Walls. ( Mr Flynn was M.C. and he discharged his many duties in an efficient manner. The supper was an excellent one and was greatly appreciated. The floor was not in very good order and the dust nuisance was very bad. During the supper interval euchre prizes were presented by the Very Rev. Dean Hackett, who also thanked those who had assisted to make the social so successful and also the large crowd for their attendance. * A Highland Fling in costume was performed by Miss 0. Sanderson ■and Master Poland, and a solo was well rendered by Miss Hirst. Supper extras were played by the Misses Wilson and Barrett.
