KARANGAHAKE BURGLARY WHAREPOA PONTOON DECLARED UNSAFE FOR USE (From theHauraki Plains Gazette of July 23, 1923.); The picture theatre at Karangahake, which is leased to Messrs Finch and Whiting, was broken into yesterday and a quantity of confectionery, valued at about 10s, was taken from, the operating room. The matter was reported to Constable McClinchy, who, after making several inquiries at the school to-day, obtained statements from two of the children admitting the offence. The pontoon of the Wharepoa ferry which was closed for repairs early this week was examined by the county engineer (Mr J. Higgins), on Wednesday and declared unsafe for use. The question of a new pontoon for this ferry was briefly discussed at the last ferry conference at Thames. It was then suggested that the present pontoon be utilised until a better ferry for Orongo was obtained, when that pontoon could be utilised. As this had not yet materialised the question of whether the is one for the Thames and Hau- ' Wharepoa ferry will be re-opened raki Plains County Councils to decide. At the recent conference it was suggested that the wishes of the ratepayers in the vicinity of the ferry be obtained.
