DAMAGE AT SCHOOL

HOOLIGANS AT NETHERTON BOTTLES BROKEN IN BATH GATES THROWN IN DEEP DRAIN Hooliganism of a particularly warped mentality was practised at the Netherton School on Saturday night. Gates were removed .from their hinges and thrown into the large drains to float away on the tide. Beer bottles were smashed in the school swimming bath into which were also thrown bricks, tins, the school copper and other articles. Disorder in Dressing Shed Disorder was created in the dressing sheds where the girls’ drill uniforms were flung into a heap together with shoes and miscellaneous articles. Beer bottles were found in profusion.

speed and concluded with “Rest the souls of those whom we may not see again on this earth, but who are with us even this night also, in spirit.” Replying for the guests of honour, W.O. McLean said it was hard to see why he should be called upon to speak for “so many good soldiers.” “ However, thank you all a thousand times for such a wonderful reception and your many kindnesses,” he continued. “It is certainly great to be back again and know how you have remembered us. I will now call upon Lt.-Col. Fitzpatrick who was with us in a couple of ‘goes’ over there, to say a few words.” Ngatea Boys Did Well Lt.-Col. Fitzpatrick said that although'he had returned earlier, he well recalled several Ngatea boys who had been in his crowd. Major Seymour Parfitt who had done a worthy job overseas and was still doing the same in New Zealand, the late C.Q.M. Sgt. “Jerry” Mahoney, who until his death in action had fulfilled his responsibilities with considerable merit and also W.0.11. “Hec” McLean, present this evening. The colonel related two humorous incidents as regards the latter, which greatly appealed to the crowd. He said that “Hec” fully deserved the rank he had earned overseas, that it had been a pleasure to associate with .those representatives from Ngatea. Musical honours were enthusiastically accorded and Bandsman G. Vercoe played “When The Lights Go On Again, All Over the World,” those who knew it joining in with heartfelt sincerity.

Dancing continued until the' early hours.
