IS IT RUMOUR?
SODIUM CHLORIDE ON HAND TO CONTACT MINISTER PIAKO COUNTY DECISION It was reported by the chairman of the Piako County Council, Mr D. Johnson, at the July meeting, that information had been received regarding supplies of sodium chloride which was to be released to farmers shortly. The chairman stated it was thought that about 500 tons would be released, but at a high price. Supplies of such a commodify would be greatly appreciated by farmers for use in eradicating noxious weeds, he said, but as yet no official information has been: received regarding the matter. Discussion followed upon the possibility of supplies of sodium chloride being issued and the manner of its distribution. Councillors were of the opinion .that a - considerably greater quantity would have to Ibe released to, supply the whole country. It was also their opinion that supplies should be rationed direct to county councils on the basis of last year’s supply, instead of fanners having to obt&b it through merchants. It was decided to write to the Minister to ascertain if there was my truth in this information and, if so, to try and obtain the price at which it would be selling. Ft was also decided to suggest to the Mfrnfcter that supplies of sodium chloride be rationed on county councils rather ’than to merchants, in order that a more equitable distribution might be effected at a lower price.
