SPORT IN CAMP
WAR PRISONERS AT PLAY EASTER SPORTS MEETING LETTER FROM CPL. G. BENNETT Word of a successful sports meeting held in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany is contained in a letter from Cpl. G. G. (Chummy) Bennett to his mother, Mrs G. Bennett, Princess Street, Paeroa. Writing early in May Cpl. Bennett commented on the big dividend paid by Billy Peach at Auckland during the Christmas Racing Carnival and expressed sympathy with the owner, Mr J. Irwin in not investing on the horse that day. Continuing, Cpl. Bennett states that a sports meeting held at Easter had been a great success and that although he had not won an event he had secured four places and his room had won the shield for the most points scored. Exhibition rugby and soccer matches were also part of the sports programme,. ending in a draw. “I don’t suppose there will be any football played in Paeroa this year but we will set it going again when we return,” writes Cpl. Bennett. In conclusion he states that he is fit and well but has not seen any Paeroa boys in his camp as yet, Dan Fisher of Kerepeehi being the only local boy with him.
