BACK TO THE BAY
PTE. R. LOWE WELCOMED HOME . WHITIANGA WELL DECORATED The only Whitianga boy of the first draft of troops to return to New Zealand from the Middle East was welcomed to his home town on Thursday, July 15. This, was Pte. R. Lowe whose arrival was announced by the loud tooting of motor car horns as he neared the bend of the road leading into the township of Whitianga. Residents, upon observing the gaily decked motor cars, quickly gathered together and gave the hero of the day a rousing welcome “back home.” Flags flying from the mastheads of the shops and post office signified the feelings of the public, while the motor vessel “The Lady Jocelyn” which was in port at the time, rapidly decked out in all the bunting available and made a gay sight. Cheers and handshakes greeted Pte. Lowe as he stepped from the car, and after he had been genuinely welcomed back, he was surrounded and carried away by his relatives.
