OUTLETS CLEANED

WEATHER DELAYS WORK HAURAKI PLAINS DRAINS FOREMAN’S REPORT TO BOARD That a number of outlets had 'been cleaned and improved during the month although the inclement weather had held up many jobs was reported by the foreman, Mr W. Johnson, to Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. The report read as under:— “The Hauraki roadside drain west side from Jubilee to Allen centre drain has now been completed. This drain was very badly squeezed in so the batters had to be trimmed back so as to get a spit out of the bottom. “The Piako roadside drain north side which had been damaged by pigs has now been cleaned by the sharemilker. Cleaned On Wages “A portion of the Hauraki roadside drain east side along the school frontage has been cleaned on wages. i “The outlet opposite Dr. Miller’s residence in Waihou street has now been opened up. - “The school ohtlet drain -has been improved from the floodgate to near the pipes at the footpath near Hauraki road. The outlet back to the floodgate has also been opened up and it will take about another day for one man to complete this job. “I inspected the stop bank with the area member, Mr Hill, from Mules to Taylor’s outlet. Mr Hill decided that the worst breaks along this portion should be patched up which has been completed except one place known as the old duck creek. Outlets Inspected “ I also inspected the stopbank from Taylor’s outlet northward to Orongo boundary floodgate. Most of this portion of the bank is in a very bad state. I inspected the stopbank near Willow drain to Sutton-Madgwick boundary. Most of this also is in a very bad state. I inspected Kopuarahi stopbank with the two members, Mr Hill and Mr Roy Green, and it was decided to patch up the worst breaks behind the back of Mr Bowen’s section.

“There were 150 bags used on this job which were obtained from the Turua factory. There are eighty which have to be paid for at 3d per bag, the remainder were given to us as they were faulty bags. “There is only one remedy for these stopbanks and that is dredging as hand labour, shovels and barrows are not in question as the work would be absolutely too costly. ♦ Drain To Be Repaired “I interviewed the landowner on the Ngatea roadside drain north side which had been damaged by pigs and told him he’would have to repair the damage which he promised fie would have done straight away. I told him he would have to put the batter of the dfain in the same condition it was l in before it had been damaged by his pigs. “The outlets back of the floodgate on the Madgwick-Spencer drain and Spencer drain are being opened up and I hope to have them completed by Thursday night weather permitting. “ Outlets at the back of the floodgate on the Johnston and Sutton drains have been opened up. “ There are so many jobs that have been started but the work could not be carried on on account of too much water to take up the bottoms. I hope to complete the jobs as soon as time and weather permit.”
