PAEROA WIN 16 TO THREE rugby on the domain big crowd watches match ' One of the biggest crowds ever seen on the Paeroa Domain for the last two years witnessed the Paeroa Rugby Union’s junior representative team defeat the Paeroa Veterans by 16 points to three on Saturday. Several of the men who have recently returned, from the Middle East turned out with the Veterans. The game throughout was fast and fairly open, the Paeroa team handling better and dominating play with more combination than their opponents., •The Veterans although lacking -in fitness displayed flashes of ability and at times had the representatives’ defence worried. The teams lined out as under:— Paeroa (green).—C. Speechley, W. McKain, W. Shilton, A. Crosby, R. Baker,. K. Ryall, F. Chaney, J. Murphy, R. Pearson, N. Hansen, W. Strong, R. Neil, J. Jamieson, G. Fuiton, W’. Niven. Veterans (black and white). —K. Dean, :G. Fraser, W. Vedder, A. Pivott, Jamieson, G. Douglas, R. Short, Keppa, B. McDonald, C. Baker, J. Walls, B. Sarsfield, J. Pascoe, Hodson, F; Williams. Veterans kicked off and play settled down in Paeroa’s territory with the Veterans setting the pace. Douglas got away but was. well grassed a few yards from the Paeroa line. Paeroa Backs Away Chaney sent the Paeroa backs away, Ryall handing on to Baker who passed behind Shilton when challenged, the movement breaking down. Chaney made an opening and broke clear ball at toe and Bakei’ came up fast to kick across the Veterans’ line but* Pivott forced. Chaney sent the Paeroa backs away, Ryall sending on to Baker who cut through nicely but spoilt a pretty movement by hanging on when almost clear and stumbled and fell. The Paeroa backs again got away near the Veterans’ line, and Shilton scored near the posts. Ryall easily gained the major points. Paeroa - — - - 5 Veterans ’ — —- —- —- 0 The Veteran forwards worked play into the Paeroa twenty-five but the greens soon returned play to midfield. From a scrum Chaney sent Ryall away and he handed on to Baker to Shilton who short-punted and followed up fast, the greens again securing and in a' scramble Jamieson scored wide otit. Veterans —- -- - 0 Veterans Score Irl an exchange of long kicks Paeroa rushed deep into the Veterans’ twenty-five and the black and whites were hard pnt to save the attackers 'scoring. A long kick from Veterans found Crosby up too close and when he went . back to retrieve was caught in possession and Vedder carried play across the Paeroa line where in a scramble Jamieson scored well out. Dean did an good with the kick. Paeroa - — 8 Veterans - — 3 Veterans set the pace and Te Monaw, Pennell and Vedder got away and penetrated right into the Paeroa twenty-five. Play went right across field and Fraser made a dash fcr the Fine but was caught before he could get Veterans were forcing the pace and

again bustled into the Paeroa twenty five where they were awarded a free kick right beside the posts but Pivott did no good with the kick. Half-time was called without furthei’ score. Paeroa - —- — — 8 Veterans —- — —- 3 After the interval play settled down in the Veterans’ territory, a period of ragged play being witnessed. From a scramble near mid-field Chaney secured, ran clean through to Dean, short punted and carried on to the Veterans’ line but Douglas came ■back at top, secured and found the line near the twenty-five. Paeroa Sets The Pace

Paeroa continued to attack and several scrums were held on the Veterans’ line, the black and whites eventually forcing to gain relief. Play continued in the Veteran territory but a series of infringements prevented the greens from finishingoff any movement. Veterans worked to the Paeroa twenty-five and from a scrum in front of the posts the Veteran backs got away but did no good. A scramble followed on the Paeroa line until the Veterans were awarded a free kick in a handy position but Vedder missed. Shilton bustled play to the Veteran goal-line but a free kick from a lineout gave the black and whites relief. From play on the Veteran twentyfive the Paeroa backs got away and Ryall scored near the corner flag. Speechley did no good with the kick. Paeroa —- —- H Veterans —- -- - —- 3 From play on the line neai” midfield Chaney broke clean away, beat Dean and then when challenged on the line handed on to Jamieson who ■scored in a handy position. HIGH SCHOOL WIN THIRDS BEATEN 16 TO NIL High School defeated the Paeroa Thirds by 16 points to nil in a rugby match played on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday. Scorers for High School were R. Jenn’ngs. R. Milne, R. Kere and W. Ryall while T. Morrison converted two tries. Mr S. Keutenius was the referee.
