FIVE CANDIDATES

HAURAKI ELECTORATE PARTIES ALREADY IN FIELD COMING GENERAL ELECTION At least five candidates are announced to contest the Hauraki seat at the coming general election. The first candidate to enter the field was Mr H. T. Head, who contested the seat in the by-election in January, 1942, and polled 1082 votes against the 3805 polled by Mr A. S. Sutherland. Mr Head, who is a returned soldier of the last war, and president of the Home Services’ Association, will contest the seat as an Independent. Mr R. G. Young, farmer, of Gordonton, and North Island secretary of the Real Democracy movement, will contest the seat in the interests of that movement. Mr A. S. Sutherland, who won the 1 seat in January, 1912, has again been announced by the Dominion head-

quarters of the National Party as the official candidate of the National Party for the seat. Democratic Labour Candidate An announcement last Friday by Captain Pennefather, chairman of the Auckland executive of the Democratic-Soldier-Labour Party, stated that Mr Donald Cameron Beloe, farmer, of Putamahoe, will contest the seat in the interests of that party. Mr Beloe is a member of the Pukekohe Technical High School Board of managers and was formerly president of the Pukekohe branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. The Labour Party is putting up a candidate, and it is expected that the official candidate will be announced from Wellington within the next few days. A well-known farmer, of Mangateparu, prominent in Home Guard and Returned Services’ Association circles, is rumoured to be the possible nominee.
