DEATH OCCURS AT THAMES MR JOHN, WILLIAM BAXTER EARLY SETTLER AT NG ATE A One of the early settlers on the Hauraki Plains, ,Mr John William Baxter died at a private hospital at Thames on Wednesday, in his 69th. year. The late Mr Baxter was born at Lydney, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, and came to New Zealand in 1910, taking up land at Totara, Thames, soon afterwards. In 1913 he purchased a section on the Pohunga Island Block, on the Hauraki Plains, and” went through all the hardships of the early settlers in bringing the land into production, until when he sold the property and came to live at Thames.. During the early settlement of the Plains, Mr Baxter was the first chairman of the, Ngatea School Committee. He was also one of those who sponsored the erection of the Ngatea bridge and. public hall, and he took a keen interest in all matters associated with the progress of district. Mr Baxter is survived by his wife, two sons,. Messrs W- J- and R. G. Baxter, and two daughters, Mrs F. De Jongh, of Australia, and Miss J- E. Baxter, of Thames.
