SOLDIER ON A FARM
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Solne time ago you published in a report of proceedings at the local branch of the R.S.A. some remarks of a rather uncomplimentary nature referring to the settlement of a returned soldier on the Hauraki Plains. I personally gathered from what was said at the meeting that the State Advances Corporation had placed an ex-soldier on a farm where he would have little chance, of ever succeeding. I therefore asked the corporation to let me have a statement. I have now received correspondence from the State Advances Corporation. The ex-soldier concerned was not only given good advice but was treated generously by the corporation as to the necessary financial advance, and the ex-soldier, who is apparently a good and industrious farmer, is very well satisfied with the arrangement. There is a good deal of loose talk as to the settlement of soldiers on the land and it is desirable that the action of the corporation in the present case should be widely known, because in my opinion the corporation is always ready to act helpfully where the interests of ex-servicemen are concerned. —I am, etc., JAMES THORN. Wellington.
