EXTRA LABOUR

PRIMARY PRODUCERS’ NEED MR SUTHERLAND’S APPEAL .* - FARMERS WILL CO-OPERATE The necessity for extra labour for the primary producers was stressed by Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, speaking on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives recently. Emphasising the necessity for farm production increase, he. said that as Britain had asked for an increased allocation of butter and cheese this year it was time something was done by the Minister in charge of Manpower and the Minister of Marketing to make an announcemerit about extra labour for primary producers. Women and

children had done a great job up to the present, but something would -have tn be done.. Production Important * A Minister declared in the House recently that the time had arrived when probably production was just as necessary as manpower. If that were correct then it was time that some of the manpower that was going to be ■ released was directed into the field of primary production. Mi’ Sutherland said he hoped that the Minister of National Service and the Minister of Marketing would both give these considerations early attention. Men producing meat and wool wanted assistance. He had been informed that runs in the high country of the South Island were pretty well depleted of labour. Among the men who were going to be released from the armed forces, some of those who were used to that sort of work should be directed to it. Farmers Would Co-operate The wool was needed, and it was time that the Minister of National Service made an announcement. The past season had closed and now was the time for the farmers to get ready for increased production. They wanted time, however, to procure fresh stock and he felt sure that if the Minister would meet the farmers in the matter of labour he would not be disappointed. Little could be done about fertiliser, but he thought that something should be done about the direction of men into seasonal farm labour.
