ARMY BEATEN 3 TO NIL HARD-FOUGHT GAME MATCH PLAYED AT TE AROHA Evenly matched teams, the Paeroa backs out-playing their opponents ■while the heavier Army forwards troubled the Paeroa pack, provided an interesting rugby match at Te Aroha on Saturday when the Paeroa Rugby Union’s junior representative team -refeated a Te Aroha Army team by three points to nil. Barker. Paeroa kicked off facing the sun. From a line-out Paeroa backs got away, each man handling but no ground was gained. Ainsley got going but good tackling by Shilton stopped a dangerous rush. Speechley nicely fielded a long kick beat two Army men and with a good kick gained 25 yards. Army Force To Save -Paeroa continued to press and Army forced to save. Army forwards broke through but Ryall picked up from the toes of a rush and found the line near halfway.
Handling in the scrum by Paeroa gave Army a free kick which Ryall failed to hold and Army looked dangerous, the ball going out of play near Paeroa’s twenty-five. Army continued to press and a scrum was called on the green’s line. Army secured but Shilton managed to collect and hand on to Baker who dodged clear and found the line near the twenty-five yard line. Army were having the territorial advantage, most of the play being inside the Paeroa twenty-five. Monkley was caught in possession and Paeroa broke across the Army goal line but a knock-on right on the line spoilt the opportunity. Paeroa secured from the ensuing scrum but Crosby was caught before he could get rid of the Ball. Paeroa took a turn at attack and Y kept Army pinned in their own twentyffive until the ball came back from a ' scramble to the Paeroa backs who were caught flat-footed, Army breaking through to carry play to Paeroa’s twenty-five where Speechley kicked out to save.
Good Work By Niven Good work by Niven carried play to mid-field but Cornes got away down the line, returning play to Paeroa’s twenty-five before ho was pushed out. Bustling tactics carried Paeroa to the Army line where the defenders kicked out. From the line-out Army were caught out of position but P. Murray came round fast, picked up and kicked well down-field. Army backs got away near' the Paeroa line but Cornes held on too long and was well grassed. Bustling tactics by the green forwards carried play the length of the field the ball, going out near the Army goal line. Half-time was called without score. ' A series of line-outs near midfield ensued after the interval until Army gradually worked into Paeroa’s twenty-five. Crosby made an opening when he eut through from a scrum and high kicked. Paeroa forwards started a bustling rush but Hastie was caught off-side. Paeroa were setting the pace and play was mostly in Army territory. During a scramble just inside Paeroa’s territory Ricketts was caught .off-side and Monkley had a shot at goal hut did not good. Baker Scores Well Out Paeroa rushed play to the Army line and in a scramble Baker dived •over well out. Ryall missed the kick. Paeroa 3, Army O'. When J. Murray failed to take a Jong kick from Paeroa Army were troubled but rallied round in time to .stop the attack. Paeroa kept Army on the defensive and Ryall secured in a handy position but was not supported. From a scramble Shilton secured in front of the posts and attempted a drop-kick but did no good and Army forced.
Again Paeroa attacked and again Army forced. When Baker failed to collect a long kick and the bounce beat him Army Jlroke away and looked dangerous but Fulton came across, collected and kicked out. Back came Paeroa to the attack and were awarded a penalty wide out on
Army’s twenty-five but Ryall’s kick fell short. Army got away but Shilton tackled well and Baker supported, collected and found the line mid-field. Army On The Attack Army worked to the Paeroa line and a series of line-outs were held not seven yards from the green’s line. Army were granted a free kick on the Paeroa twenty-five well out but Monkley did no good with his shot at goal. When Speechley attempted a speculator during an Army rush and missed, the looked dangerous but Speechley was able to fall on the ball and held up play. Army broke through from a scrum but off-side play gave Paeroa relief to return play into Army territory with the free kick ball going out. Baker intercepted an Army passing rush and kicked over the head of the Army fullback but P. Murray came round, collected and kicked out near his own goal-line. From a scrum near the Army line ■Crosby tried to work the blind side but was pushed out. When a Paeroa passing rush near Army line broke down the red and blacks broke clear well into Paeroa’s territory but Speechley came back at top, picking up at full speed to kick ■out. Hastie broke through but lack of speed resulted in him being grassed. Time was called a few minutes later. Paeroa - - & Army — ----- — ® Mr A. Watford was the referee.

TE AROHA BEATEN 6 TO 3 The Paeroa third grade representative team defeated 1 a Te Aroha team by six points to three in a match played on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday.
