FORTY YEARS AGO

TUNNEL AT KARANGAHAKE PAEROA CHURCH SOCIAL ABOUT 90 COUPLES ATTEND (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of July 2, 1903.) Some splendid metal for roadmaking purposes is being taken out of the railway tunnel at Karangahake just at present, and the County Council decided, at its meeting yesterday, to obtain this metal and put it on the road, breaking it afterwards, the same as is being done on the Junction road. One of the county contractors is at present supplying the metal from the tunnel to the council, but his contract will be finished very soon and the metal will be then obtained by the county engineer and spread on the road near Karangahake. Last night the Church of England held their periodical social which was a great success, about 90 couples being present. During the evening Messrs Baker, McGregor, Griffin and others rendered selections, all of which were well appreciated. The floor was in splendid condition, so no one could help but enjoy oneself. These are without doubt the most popular dances of the season.
