GOOD THRILLER
“ THIS GUN FOR HIRE ” “BAD MEN OF ARIZONA” PROGRAMME AT THE REGENT “This Gun For Hire,” the new Paramount romantic thriller which will show at the Regent Theatre Thursday and Friday, contains one of the most hair-raising portraits of a killer ever brought to the screen, and there’s ai good reason for it. The screenplay was written by Albert Maltz and W. R. Burnett. Burnett was the writer who achieved fame by writing “Little Caesar,” one of the most successful of the gangsterracketeer stories. Starring Veronica Lake and Robert Preston, “This Gun for Hire” features Laird Cregar and Alan Ladd, sensational screen newcomer, who plays the part of The Raven, a psychopathic, cold-blooded killer. One phase of the story of “This Gun for Hire” deals with the activities' of a spy ring. Ladd, for vengeance, wipes it out by gunfire. The original stagecoach which once made the express run between Tombstone and Tucson, Arizona, was purchased by Harry Sherman for reproduction for Paramount’s latest historical epic, entitled “Bad Men of Arizona,” which will also show at the Regent Theatre on Thursday and Friday. During his trip to select location spots for his Western troupe, the veteran outdoor film-maker was intrigued by the century-old vehicle and had it shipped to the Bar-20 Ranch, headquarters for the Hopalong Caasidy cowpokes, situated in the heart of San Feijnando Valley. It remained on the ranch for the ensuing weeks, on platform display, while; architects built another coach like it for the picture. Subject to the tale is Wyatt Earp, former fighting Marshal of Arizona, responsible for the present lawful status of regions once infested by outlaws. Richard Dix, Edgar Buchanan and Frances Gifford appear in the picture. Also included in the cast are Kent Taylor, Don Castle, ' Mickey Eissa, Chris Pin Martin and Clem Bevans, with William McGann directing.
