MASQUERADE BALL HELD FUNCTION AT KEREPEEHI VERY ENJOYABLE EVENING (From the Hauraki Plains Gazette of June 28, 1583.) A plain and fancy dress masquerade ball in aid of the hospital site funds was held at Kerepeehi Thursday evening. Though the attendance was not very large a very enjoyable evening was spent. The music by members of the local orchestra was very good and Mr G. Masters as M.C. kept the function going with a swing. A launch from Thames had been engaged, but owing to the state of the weather and to other attractions there were few intending passengers at Shortland, so the launch did not run. However, there were many who waited in vain on the various wharves down the river. A dainty supper was handed round about 11 o’clock, and dancing, including a number of novelty dances, was carried out till an early hour. The first prize for the ladies’ fancy dress was won by Miss R. Brown, who represented a Maori Maid, while Mrs W. Kidd, whose costume represented a powder puff, was awarded the prize for the most original lady’s costume. Mr W. Kidd, who was dressed as a girl, was awarded first prize and Mr C. Fawcett, whose costume of twelling decorated with sponges, brushes, soap, etc., and representing the “order of the bath” was voted the most original in the men’s competition.
