TOTALISATOR PERMIT TROTTING CLUB’S REQUEST FUNDS FOR CATHOLIC CHURCH (From the Hauraki Plains Gazette of June 23, 1923.) At a meeting of representatives of the Te Aroha, Cambridge, and Thames Trotting Clubs, held in Te Aroha last Monday, it was decided to apply for a totalisator permit to hold a combined two days’ trotting meeting in Auckland, it being maintained that the three clubs had been struggling along the past four seasons without a tote, and as a result they now find themselves very much behind financially. Therefore they asked for a little consideration from the 'Government in order* to reduce their indebtedness. On Friday last a social and dance was held in the Victoria Hall, Waikino, to raise funds for the Catholic Church. The function proved a great success, over 120 being present, including visitors from Waihi, Paeroa and other parts of the district. The duties of M’s.C. were carried out by Messrs J. Jesney and T. Keohan who fulfilled their duties to the satisfaction of all. The musicians for the occasion were Mr Claude Cater and Mr Samson. During the evening a special dance took place, the winners being Mrs Archer and Mr B. Lewis. The euchre tournament which was held during the evening was won by Mrs H. Murray and Mr Corrigan. The arrangements for the social were in the capable hands of the secretary, Mr T. Keohan.
