LAND FOR SOLDIERS

AREAS ON THE PENINSULA WHENUAKITE & KAITOKE RECOMMENDATION BY SETTLER At the June meeting of the Thames District Council of Primary Production, Mr W. Hamilton, of Whenuakite, gave full details and particulars of Crown Lands in the Whenuakite and Kaitoki district that he considered very suitable for settlement of returned soldiers under the rehabilitation Act and particulars of the work required to bring the land into cultivation. The land, he said, was all owned by the Crown and comprised some 2150 acres of workable land. Details of the sections which were suitable for treatment by tractors and discs were given as under: — (a) Section 4, 916 acres. Abounds the long metal road on the western side extending over the hills toward Kaitoki. Abuts the Ferry, Whenuakite main road (metalled) fronting such for a distance of approximately 100 chains. Also intersected by. a legalised road (not formed) from the main road to Kaitoki. Approximately 500 acres of workable land.

■ (b) Section 5, 500‘ acres. Abounds the Ferry-Whenuakite main road metalled, on the eastern side fronting such for a distance of approximately 60 chains. Big proportion of such is swampy nature. Approximately 450 acres of workable land. (C) Crown land around the U Trig. Abounds the Ferry-Whenuakite main road (metalled) on the eastern side for approximately 60 chains thence along the Hahei road (metalled), approximately 40 chains. Approximately 40 acres- of workable land. (d) Crown land. 661 acres. Low country between Hahei and Otama (T. Aitchison) at Hot Water Beach. Access, Hahei road (metalled) with a short frontage. Approximately. 200 acres of workable land. (e) Crown land, 619 acres. Next Harsant’s ‘big block at the back of Lilley’s farm. Not fronting a formed road. Legal surveyed road runs through the property to give legal access to Harsant’s big- block. Approximately 200 i acres- of workable land. (f) Crown Land around P Trig. Abounds the Hot Water Beach road (metalled) on the eastern side for approximately 40 chains. Mostly of a tableland nature. Approximately 400 acres of workable land. Mr Hamilton said that he estimated that the equipment required to double disc this land would, be as under:— Two tractors (D 4 preferable), 2 giant discs, 1 length suitable wire rope and chains for removing trees-, 1 fuel pump, 2 huts (mobile preferable), 1 trailer to carry implements about 2 slash hooks, 2 spades and 2 axes.
