SUCCESSFUL YEAR

PAEROA BOWLING CLUB REVIEW OF PAST SEASON ANNUAL MEETING TO-NIGHT “In presenting to you the 39th. annual report and balance sheet, I have pleasure on behalf of the exone,” states the annual report of the president, Mr C. C. Webb, to be submitted at to-night’s annual meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club. The report continues: — Brother Bowlers,

In presenting to you the 39th. Annual Report and Balance Sheet, I have pleasure on behalf of the Executive in congratulating the members on the successful outcome of the past season, which was an enjoyable one.

The official opening was held on October 10, 1942, and members, visiting bowlers and friends, were favoured with fine weather conditions, together with a green that reflected great credit on the green superintendent and greenkeeper, and resulted in an enjoyable day being spent by all.

The thanks of the Club are due to the Paeroa Municipal Band who, as in the past, loyally assisted with musical selections in the the success of our opening day. Ideal weather conditions were experienced throughout the playing season, not one playing Saturday being missed. The green was officially closed on May 1. The Green.- — The thanks of the club are. due to Mr T. L. Williams and his band of loyal helpers for their work in bringing the green to such excellent condition for opening day, and to the greenkeeper in maintaining the green in good order throughout the greater part of the season. Unfortunately the club was without a greenkeeper for the last two montns of the season, and it was only by the loyal and willing assistance of members that the green was kept in order and ready for play at all times. Special mention is made of Messrs W. Morrison, C. Smith and F. McQuillan, one of whom was always on hand when required and so assisted in tiding the executive over a trying period. Mr Williams resigned from the position of green superintendent in March, Mr Buckrell taking over this office from that date. Finance.— The Club’s finances continue to receive careful attention and are in a healthy condition. Our energetic treasurer Mr Geo. Stewart keeps a careful cheek on all revenue, and deserves credit for his efforts.

As the credit balance of our account with our bankers is fairly substantial and in order that the greater portion of same may be earning interest, it is a recommendation from your committee' that the sum of say £loo' be transferred to a new account to be opened, with the Post Office Savings Bank. Centre Meetings.—Due to war conditions the business of both South Auckland and Goldfields Associations has been practically suspended and no regular meetings have been held. Clothier Shield.— This fixture was played at Te Aroha, two Paeroa teams taking part. The holders, Faulkner, Smith, Westlake and Williams, were defeated in the final oy Thames. Goldfield and Fraser Stars.— No matches were played in these competitions. Club Competitions A Grade Champion.—W. E. Westlake. We congratulate Mr Westlake on winning this coveted honour. He played good bowls all through the competition and thoroughly deserved his win. B Grade Champion.—'Geo. Bain. First Year Players.— Tom Smith. Handicap Singles.—A. Barnett. Handicap Pairs.— A. Barnett, W. F. Johnstone. President’s Threes.—P. R. Hubbard, W. F. Johnstone, T. L. Williams. Brenan Shield.—L. Shaw, V. Boles, H. W. McGregor, T. L. Williams. Club Fours.—F. McQuillan, P. R. Hubbard, C. C. Webb, A. K. McGregor. Games Away.—Representatives of your club attended the openings at Waihi, Te Aroha, Hikutaia and Thames. Teams from the club competed in various tourneys, and in the Thames Easter Tourney a Paeroa team, Faulkner, Westlake, Webb and Williams, were the winners. There were 45 entries and the win was a popular one. Sick Members.—To our selector, Mr L. Gibb we extend our sympathy in his illness and trust that we shall see him on the green with us again this season. Those who have served with “Len” on the executive over the years will readily testify to his untiring efforts and his readiness to do anything in his power to further the interests of the club. Bereavements.—We report with regret the death of one of our life mem-‘-Lil

bers, Mr W. J. Towers. The club was represented at the funeral and a wreath was sent. Another pioneer of bowling in Thames Valley, Mi’ J. A. Clothier of Te Aroha, passed away recently. A letter of sympathy was sent to Mrs Clothier and family. Members on Active Service.— Two more of our members, Messrs W. V. Aston and V. G. O’Loughlin, have joined the Forces. We wish them the best of luck and a safe return. Valedictory.— During the year the club lost two of its members, Messrs A. J. Bowmar and Gordon Stewart, both of whom were transferred from Paeroa. War Work and the Club’s Part.—lt would be fair to say that each and every member of the Club is contributing in some way to the war effort, and members have not neglected this, while maintaining their interest in the game. The club organised a Patriotic Concert during the year, the sum of £64 4s 9d being handed over to the Patriotic Committee as a result. To Messrs R. Whiting and W. Pirie is due the chief credit for the success of the function. They did an untold amount of work and it was gratifying to see their efforts rewarded. Conclusion. — I wish to extend my personal thanks to the Executive for their loyal support to myself and the club during my term of office, and to all members for the generous assistance they have given me at all times. ■Special thanks are due to the secretary, Mr T. W. Pye, and to the treasurer, Mi’ Geo. iStewart, both of whom have been a tower of strength to the club. Also the selector, Mr Gibb, and the match committee, who have at all times striven to make our games enjoyable. Our best thanks are due to the ladies who rendered assistance on open-

ing day, and also to the lady who prepares our afternoon tea each Saturday, Mrs Scott. We also thank the staff of the Hauraki Plains Gazette for the full reports they have given of our activities.

In conclusion I tender the club my best wishes for its continued success. I appreciate the honour in being elected president of the club. I have enjoyed my term of office and I am sure that my successor will receive the same generous support that ha® been extended me. For the Committee, CHAS. C. WEBB, , i President.
