FORTY YEARS AGO
SALVATION ARMY SOCIAL SUCCESSFUL EVENING ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT FUND (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of June 18, 1903.) The Paeroa Salvation Army held a social evening in the barracks, Wharf Street, last night, the building being Well filled. Mr Moss, M.H.R., occupied the chair. Some interesting addresses were given and recitations and musical items -were also rendered. A collection was taken up in aid of the Salvation Army rescue work. The Catholic social, in aid of St. Joseph’s Convent Fund, held in the Criterion Theatre last evening, was well attended and passed off most successfully. The floor was in good order, while the music, supplied by Miss Capill (piano), Miss Pugh (violin), and Mr Mettam (cornet), was excellent. -Supper extras were played by Miss Williams and Miss Barrett. Quite a large number took part in the euchre tournament, the lady’s prize (a silver mounted purse and card case, presented by Mr Lough- 1 man), being won by Mrs E. Edprize (a clock presented by Mr wards, while the gentlemen’s E. Jones), fell to Mr M. Goonan. The prizes were presented by Mr H. Poland, that gentleman also making a short speech in which, on behalf of the Ladies’ Committee, he thanked those present for their attendance. The supper was provided by the Ladies’ Committee, and needless to say, was excellent and was well appreciated. Mr P. Flynn was M.C. and discharged his manifold duties in a satisfactory manner.
