LITERARY EFFORT
12-YEAR-OLD THAMES GIRL
“MOIRA OF THE POPLARS”
40,000 WORDS STORY WRITTEN
To write a story of about 40,000 'words is the remarkable achievement of a youthful author, Waveney George, aged 12 years, the elder daughter of Mr and Mrs F. George of Karaka Creek, Thames.
The book is dedicated to Mr and Mrs George and it serves to show how young people are thinking and their reactions to the old people around them.
“Moira of the Poplars*” which is the title of the story, concerns a holiday “spent by the heroine and all the happenings of such an occasion, with picnics, exchanges of visits, club entertainment, even a drama festival. An accident and tragedy only mean a change of a leading role in one of the plays in the festival, then there is something of romance and, of course, a happy ending. This young lady certainly has a flair for writing and would perhaps be advised now to attempt a Story for boys and girls. She has shown perseverance and initiative, for she secured an old diary for her writing, blocking out the datelines so that her manuscript was kept together in strong binding. We understand that Waveney tried hei’ hand at verse and plays so that future developments will be awaited with interest. ,
