WALLAN’S FINE RUN

OUT WITH THE HARRIERS THREE PACKS COMPETE TEAM TO VISIT AUCKLAND On Saturday last members of the Paeroa Harrier Club assembled at the Paeroa Domain grandstand for another weekly run. Three packs were formed, the colts being led, by A. Vosper, the slow pack by G. Vlahovich and the racing pack by F. Sharp. The colts chose a course of about three miles embracing road and country. A fast pace was maintained from the start, the mo%t prominent runners being iP. Morrison and A. Vosper. Although M. Follas and R. Leach are newcomers to the sport they ran with plenty of determination and showed a particular liking for cross-country. A run-in held over 880yds. resulted: A. Vosper 1, R- Leach 2, P. Morrison 3. Two harriers, L. \Vheeler and S. Wheeler, seen in action for the first time this year, were most prominent -in the slow pack, which ran over a four-mile cross-country course. A. Currie and G. Vlahovich ran exceedingly well and were up with the leaders all the way.

The racing pack consisted of the team chosen to represent the club in the first open race of the year held

in Auckland. As this was the final run, before the big race • next * week the members ran over a 61-mile course of road and country.

A great surprise during the running was the forward showing of M. Wallan, who is fast approaching his best form. From the start J. Fowler, who is a model of consistency, went to the front and set a very fast pace. Fowler and Wallan were to the fore after a mile had been covered, followed by M. Vuglar, F. Sharp, T. Morrison.

With half the distance covered, M. Wallan was out in front, striding along in dashing style followed by a bunch consisting of Vuglar, Fowler, Morrison and Sharp. With one mile to go, Wallan was leading Sharp, Morrison and Fowler. Over the final 880 yards M. Wallan put a break on the. field of about 20 yards.

Finishing exceptionally fast, M. Vuglar and J. Fowler just managed to catch M. Wallan on the post, the former getting the decision by inches. T. Morrison was' next, followed by Sharp a long way back. T. Morrison suffered from a leg injury and did not finish with his usual ■brilliance but nevertheless he ran a very creditable race. The usual weekly run will be held next Saturday from the Paeroa Domain grandstand at 3.0 p.m. The pairs team race, which was to be hfeld next Saturday, will now be run the following Saturday, June 26.
