HOTEL LICENCES

MEETING OF COMMITTEE HAURAKI LICENSING AREA COMPLAINTS MADE TO POLICE The annual meeting of the Hauraki Licensing Committee was held at Morrinsville last week. Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., chairman, presided. Messrs G. R. Pulham (Te Kauwhata), A. J. T. Bourne (Mercer), W. Morrice and B. Chapman (Morrinsville), were present. Reference was made fey the chairman to the loss on active service of the son of Mr W. T. Osborne, a member of the committee. The clerk was instructed to convey to Mr and Mrs Osborne the committee’s sympathy. ■Police reports received showed that the conduct of licensed houses in the district had been satisfactory during the past 12 months. Certain minor renovations were required by the Health Department in some houses, and the licensees concerned had the work in luftid, though in some cases it had not. yet been completed. The chairman stated that two complaints had been received from members of the public concerning treatment at licensed houses in the dis-

trict. In each instance full inquiry had been made by the police and the inquiries satisfied' the committee that no breach of the Licensing Act had been committed. The first complaint was by a party of holiday-makers, not guests in the particular house, allegirfg refusal of accommodation, and food poisoning, .but inquiries showed that neither allegation could be substantiated. 'The second complaint concerned the alleged refusal to supply a particular order in the dining-room. The complainant on reporting the matter at the hotel office, was' invited by the person in charge to wait while she saw that he got what he wanted, but he gave her no opportunity and walked out of the house. The policy inquiry showed the licensee’s explanation of the incident to be a perfectly reasonable one.

Applications were dealt with as follow: —Transfer of publican’s licence for Hauraki Hotel, Kerepeehi, from Conrad John Welson to Arthur Frederick (Bartley. Publican’s licences were granted to Daniel Vincent Moore in respect of the Nottingham -Castle Hotel, Morrinsville, and to Thomas Alfred Sunnex' in respect of the Railway Hotel, Mercer. Renewal of publican’s licence was granted to Edward William Jones in respect of the ! Morrinsville Hotel. Renewals of accommodation licences were granted to William Miles Bain in respect of the Rangiriri Hotel, and to Andrew Hanley Annan in respect of the Bay View Hotel, Kaiaua.
