FAREWELL DANCE

FUNCTION AT TURUA KEEN MEMBER OF HOME GUARD An enjoyable dance was held in the Turua Hall to farewell Lieutenant H. Nicholson of the v Home Guard and Mrs Nicholson and family who are leaving the district. During the evening a ■ presentation of a wallet was made by acting-Captain Pye, who spoke of the high esteem in which Lieutenant (popularly known as Ces) and Mrs Nicholson were held. “Ces has been a keen member of the Home Guard since its inception, and by his devotion and keenness he has risen from the ranks to a platoon commander and has proved himself a very efficient officer. We are very • sorry to lose him, but our loss would be someone else’s gain,” said Captain Pye. “The wish of all present was success in their new venture.”

A pretty bouquet was presented to Mrs Nicholson.

Lieutenant Nicholson, responding, thanked all for the gifts and a jolly good evening- which came as a pleasant surprise. He stated when he became a member of the Home Guard he had determined to do his job to the best of his ability and he felt it was the duty of every man to train and equip himself for any emergency that might arise. Also that it would be a poor state of affairs if we made no effort to protect our home shores while our boys in the Middle - East were fighting with such success and determination. He wished the C Company every success in the future and in .closing added that there were plenty of men capable of . filling his position, all they required was opportunity to prove themselves. The Collegians Orchestra supplied the music for dancing and Mrs T. Clark (piano) and Mr Whitehead (drums) gave an extra. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss A. Johnston and Mr I. Jamiteson.
